On-line Resources
  • Be Water Smart! Teacher Activity Guide (pdf) . This unit guides children in grades 1-6 through fun problem-solving experiences that lay a foundation for conserving water.
  • Seattle's Regional Water System Virtual Tour Map. Find out where our water comes from, take virtual tours of the watersheds, find real time data on water supply conditions on this clickable map.
  • What Do You Know About H2O? (pdf) Use this quiz to find out how much you and your students know about the water we need and use.
  • Why Conserve? (pdf): This fact sheet provides an overview of why water conservation is important for our region, our environment, for future generations, and for your pocketbook.
Materials
Contact us to request the following materials:
  • Seattle's Regional Water System Poster: Hard copy version (18x24") of the Virtual Tour Map. Shows the water system, key facilities and features actual photos depicting the journey water takes from the source to the tap.
  • Shared Waters Activity Books: Fun, informative and colorful books that help students understand the link between salmon and water conservation.
  • Five Minute Shower Timer: An five minute egg timer encased in a plastic mountable housing for use in showers. Encourages users to take shorter showers. Comes with instruction disc.
  • Bert the Salmon Bookmarks: Fun, colorful bookmark depicting Bert. Features facts and web page links.
  • Home Water Conservation Kits: Individually packaged kits allow students to conduct water tests on fixtures at home and develop conservation habits.
Classroom presentations
Classroom presentations are available from Public Information Staff. Contact your utility for details.
Field Trips
Two field trips are available for groups wanting a behind-the-scenes look at how our water is collected, tested and treated.
  • Cedar River Watershed. Grades 4-6, four hours. Field trips start at the new Watershed Education Center near North Bend.
  • Water Quality Lab. Grades 9 and up, two hours. Learn how water is monitored, tested and treated in our region. Field trips start at our new Water Quality Lab near Safeco Field. Reservations need to be made four weeks in advance. Contact us for more information.
