Toilet Test Results

Since 1994, all residential toilets sold in this country have been required to be "water efficient" and flush at 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) or less. Over the last 10 years, manufacturers have greatly improved their products. The Saving Water Partnership has developed a list of FlushStar toilets, based on flush performance of almost 100 toilet models from numerous manufacturers. The independent testing included flush volumes at the waterline and with replacement flappers for some models, which are important considerations for long-term water savings.

To make the FlushStar list, a tank-type toilet must:

  • Flush less than 1.75 gallons per flush (gpf), when set at the waterline.
  • Flush less than 2.0 gpf with a standard replacement flapper, or have a specific flapper or flush design that ensures it cannot flush more than 2.0 gallons.
  • Flush at least 250 grams of waste material.

The FlushStar list is updated as new toilets are tested, hit the market, and are identified as being locally-available. FlushStar toilets are much more likely than others to provide many years of reliable water savings, along with a much lower likelihood for the need to double flush.
